Expedition Description

Heli Basecamping Iceland is one of most active land masses on the planet, With constant volcanic eruptions and shifting glaciated terrain, it has developed one of the most unique eco systems on the planet, representative of the start of life on earth.

There are only a few ways to fully appreciate this, The Empire has teamed up with Norðurflug Helicopters to offer a combo experience of a lifetime. You will take off from Reykjavik Heli Port and immediately start to see things from a different perspective. The helicopter won't take a direct route to your destination but through some of the most incredible landscape on the planet. Starting with Þingvellir where two tectonic plates are still constantly shifting apart, to the iconic Skaldbreið where one massive eruption caused a shield like mountain to be formed and lava fields all the way to the base. Langjōkull glacier is next on the flight path where you can see one of the largest icecaps of Europe and all of its glacier tongues still flowing and calving its way through the land. A landing will be in a remote destination that only helicopter can access before heading to one of Iceland´s most active geothermal areas. There will be a significant vertical shift in the landscape as you approach some of the largest highland mountains.

In the middle of the wilderness at the base of the mountains you will begin to see your goal, a remote basecamp will have been set up at an optimal location for split touring. Your guide will show you around this amazing volcano handpicking some of the most isolated lines for you to enjoy with your crew. Our custom made 4 season expedition tents have been made to withstand the harshest weather but also offer a level of comfort and functionality second to none.

During the evenings between January to March its possible to witness the Aurora Borealis lighting up the sky, April and May the days will be longer and the Midnight Sun ever approaching. 4 Days later the same helicopter will be there to pick you up, give you a circumnavigation of the mountains you just scaled and take you back to Reykjavik via some of Iceland's Natural Wonders. One night in Reykjavik will allow you to digest the adventure of a life time along side your expedition team and of course a few Icelandic beers.
